Your UNI, ID, and Card Numbers and How To Find Them

Need some help finding ID numbers? What’s the difference between a UNI and an ID number? Let break the random combinations of numbers and digits down.

UNI: Your UNI is your username in the Columbia University system. It is a combination of your initials and 4 numbers. You’ll use your UNI to log into your Barnard portal, Library Services and CLIO, SSOL, Paw Print (the University’s printing system), and just about any other Columbia/Barnard web portal. People also use UNI as shorthand for email so don’t be surprised when someone asks for your UNI when they want to email you something.

ID Number: In addition to your UNI, you have an ID number. ID numbers aren’t used that often, but are important. You’ll use your ID number with administrative stuff like financial aid and registrar paperwork. You’ll also use it when you forget your ID card and get locked out of your dorm. If you lose your ID, you can give your ID number to the person at the front desk and they can let you access the building.

Card Number: When you get your student ID card, there will be a card number listed on the back. You won’t use it for anything...unless your card loses its ability to swipe and you refuse to get a new one, so you have to give your card number to the cashiers at dining halls. If that happens, just get a new ID card.

So your card number is on the back of your card and your UNI is your email address, so where do you find your ID number? You have two options.

1. In your acceptance letter/email to Barnard, your ID number is listed there. I (Fabiha), as a junior who was accepted two years ago, still refer back to this email to find my ID number.

2. It’s on listed on your Barnard portal. On the homepage of the portal, go to the Academics tab, and then go to Slate for students. On there click My Profile and you'll see your college info including your ID number.

Phew, that was a lot of information. We hope this all helps! Reach out to our team via email at first-year@barnard.edu for any questions or concerns.
