AP/IB and Transfer Credits: What Counts?

Test and Transfer Credits! Something I am sure many of you have been curious about. Here is a brief overview of how Barnard handles AP, IB, and transfer credits.

AP/IB Credits:

Your AP/IB score can determine placement into Barnard classes or satisfy pre-requisites, but does not exempt you from any degree requirements.

For example, students with an AP score of 5 in Calculus BC still have to take a math class, but can place into a higher level of calculus. Additionally, you cannot receive credit for both an AP/IB test and the equivalent course. For example, students with a biology AP score of 4 or 5 who choose to take Biology-UN1001, affectionately known as Baby Bio, forfeit their AP bio credit.

The only exception to this is AP Psychology. You can take both AP Psych and Intro to Psych (PSYC-BC1001) and receive credit for both.

If you have AP/IB credit, it may be worth it to send it in, just because down the line it can give you a lighter course load. But, this is a choice that's entirely up to you. Barnard will grant up to 16 credits for AP/IB scores.

Transfer Credit:

If you completed college courses prior to Barnard, you can submit them to be evaluate for transfer credit and can get up to 15 credits. To submit for evaluation of transfer credit, a course must satisfy all four of the following requirements:

1. The course was taught at the college's physical campus
2. Thc course was taught by a member of of the college's faculty
3. The course was open for enrollment to college students (not a course specifically designed for high school students)
4. The course was taken in excess of high school requirements (meaning that if you did not take this course, you still would have graduated high school).

If the class you took meets all of these requirements, you can submit it for transfer credit after you've completed 12 credits at Barnard (one semester). In the spring semester, let your advisor and the Registrar's Office know that you have transfer credits you'd like to submit for evaluation and they can walk you through the process.
