 Welcome to all you need to know about Barnard's language requirement!

Whether you want to continue studying a language you took in high school, gear up for a study abroad program, become fluent in a new language, or are just looking to fulfill the Foundations requirement: everyone has to take at least 2 semesters of a foreign language.

Fabiha's Walk-In Hours Rescheduled

Hi First-Years!

Hope you all are well. I won't be holding walk-in hours on Monday, June 19 as our office will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. Just for next week, I'll hold them on Friday, June 23 instead. They will still be at the same time (2-3PM EST). If you have any questions that you want to ask before then, Nina will still be holding her office hours on Wednesday, June 21 from 9-10AM EST.

The Student Side: What's the Deal with First-Year Writing and First-Year Seminar?

First-Year Experience, Explained:

As part of Barnard's Foundations Curriculum, there are 3 required courses Barnard first-years must take. Two of these courses are First-Year Writing (FYW) and First-Year Seminar (FYS) (the third is a physical education class, but we can talk more about that later). You’ll take an FYW class one semester and an FYS class the other semester during your first year at Barnard. These 2 FY required courses (FYW and FYS) are collectively called "First-Year Experience" (FYE).

Let’s break these courses down.

Department Meetings starting June 21!

We hope you all are doing well. We are excited to announce that Barnard will be hosting meetings for different departments for the next few weeks, starting Wednesday, June 21st at 10 AM EST! More information is available down below.

For those of you who would like to attend the meetings but are unable to join the Zooms due to full capacity, we will be live-streaming them on the First-Year Instagram (@barnardfirstyear). That way, as many people as possible will be able to watch! These sessions will also be recorded for later access.

Hi First-Years,

We are excited to announce that we will be holding our own Walk-In Hours for the Class of 2027! These times are allocated for any questions you may have regarding registration, course information, or our personal experiences as Barnard students.

Nina's Walk-In Hours will be on Wednesdays from 9-10 AM EST (link here).

Fabiha's Walk-In Hours will be on Mondays from 2-3 PM EST (link here).

Walk-In Hours will begin next week on Monday, June 12.
